KENYA – AMBOSELI – MACADAMIA 1 May 2017

Support the Masai populations located close to the park so that they can continue living in harmony with the lions and elephants.

Kenya remains a paradise for great African game. This wildlife is an integral part of the life of the Masai people.

We believe that to preserve the wildlife as well as the fertility of the soils and the water reserves, all necessary for life in this area, it is essential to keep at least 10% of Eastern Africa covered by forests. Unfortunately, only 2% of these lands remain. Access to water has become a source of conflict between the human populations and the wild animals.

So as to limit the damage caused by the cohabitation of man with these animals, innovative solutions could be put in place:

  • Well-designed wells can make room for everyone. A double-well system contains one, protected well for humans and a second that is easily accessible for elephants
  • Solar panels that light up the cattle parks at night. This is designed to discourage the lions and make them turn back to antelopes, their traditional prey

When Florence, from the Gazelle Harambee Association, committed to working with the first groups of Masai people to put in place these projects, she had no idea of what was in store for her but she persevered. Olivier was able to support her in this project by helping her find the necessary means to develop her activities. But money is nothing without the right people in the right places. And Florence, a foreigner but filled with humility, was able to play a crucial role in connecting the North with the South.

The work may have been done at village level but the results are impressive, especially given the small amount that was invested. They are bringing hope that this problem can be solved:

  • New watering points have been constructed that are designed to keep the people, cattle and wild animals safe
  • Anti-lion light-up fences have been tested and installed around the cattle parks
  • More than 5000 trees have been planted in the immediate vicinity of schools

These solutions have made a real difference, but in the long term, we hope to do more. This is why we have decided to help the Masai people in this area by ensuring that they have the means to manage and maintain these infrastructures, which will allow them to not find themselves again in conflict with the elephants and lions. To do this, we are going to support them so that they can develop Macadamia plantations, one of the promising sectors identified in this zone. This plant produces an extraordinary vegetable oil that can be used in cosmetics.
